Agility Terms
 
  **Back-chaining - Training the last behavior in a chain first, then training the next-to-last behavior, then the behavior before that, and so on.  
  Blind Cross - When the handler changes sides in front of the dog, turning away from the dog, she is performing a blind cross.  
  Clicker - A handheld noisemaker used to mark a desired response. The sound of the clicker is an excellent marker because it is unique, quick, and consistent.  
  Clicker Training - A training method that employs a hand held toy noisemaker & treats to let your dog when he has performed the appropriate behavior.  
  Contact Obstacle - One of three obstacles comprised of ramps that the dog must climb up one side & down the other. The three Contact Obstacles are A-Frame, Dogwalk and Teeter-totter or Seesaw.  
Contact Zone - The section on the bottom of each ramp of the contact obstacles (A-Frame, Dogwalk & Teeter) that the dog must touch, usually painted yellow.  
  C/T - Abbreviation for click and treat.
Flat Work - Training agility behaviors and handling maneuvers without the use of agility obstacles.  
  Front Cross - When the handler changes sides in front of the dog, turning toward the dog, she is performing a front cross .  
  Handler Focus - When the dog is required to check in with his handler for direction- usually in tighter sequences with more changes of direction and discriminations.  
  Handler path- The path taken by the handler on course  
  Inside Arm/Inside Arm Signal  - a signal given by the hand closer to the dog  
  Jump Chute   -A sequence of jumps set up in a straight line, used to teach proper jumping techniques.   
  Lead Hand  -The hand closer to the dog, used most frequently to signal the correct obstacle &/or path.  
**Luring - A hands-off method of guiding the dog through a behavior. For example, a food lure can be used to guide a dog from a sit into a down. Lures are usually food, but they may also be target sticks or anything else the dog will follow.
  ** No Reward Marker (NRM)- Intended to be a signal to say, “No, that isn't what I want—try again.”  
  Obstacle Discrimination: When the dog is presented with more than one obstacle in his path and the handler must guide him to the correct one.  
  Obstacle focus- when the dog is allowed to focus on & execute the obstacle(s) immediately in his path.  Usually in fast, open sequences.   
  Off Arm/Outside Arm Signal - a signal given by the hand farther away from the dog.  
  180- a sequence involving a 180 degree turn, usually over two jumps situated next to each other.  The dog jumps over the first jump, then turns completely around (either to his left or his right) to jump the second jump.  
  Pinwheel - A series of three or more obstacles, usually jumps, set up in a circular sequence  
  Post Turn - A turn performed by bringing the dog around the handler's body without changing sides.  
  Precue - A signal given prior to a change of direction is called a precue. It is usually a hand signal using the arm farther from the dog.  
  Rear Cross - When the handler changes sides BEHIND the dog, she is performing a rear cross.  
  Reverse Flow Pivot /RFP/False Turn -A maneuver in which the handler turns toward the dog momentarily, then immediately back to the path she was traveling.  This is used to signal a possible change in direction or a place on course where the dog may need to check his stride.  Changes the dog from obstacle focus to handler focus.   
  Serpentine - A sequence involving three or more obstacles, often all jumps, with two changes of direction.   
  Shaping - Teaching a behavior by reinforcing small steps at first, then gradually building toward the finished behavior.  
  **Target - Something the animal is taught to touch with some part of his body. A target is generally stationary.  
  Targeting - Teaching the dog to move toward and interact with an object, such as touching his nose to your hand or a small plastic disc.  
  Threadle -A sequence involving two or more jumps.  The dog is sent over the first jump, pulled in between two jumps, then sent over the next jump in the same direction as he completed the first jump.     
  2o2o “Two On, Two Off"- A position on the down side of a contact obstacle where the dog's TWO rear feet are ON the board and her TWO front feet are OFF the board.  
  270 - A 270 degree turn, usually involving two jumps situated in a 90 degree angle.  The dog jumps over the first jump, out of the pocket created by the jumps, then over the second jump back into the pocket.  
  Wrap   - a maneuver involving the dog turning tightly 180 degrees around the wing or standard of a jump.

USDAA (United States Dog Agility Association): Both purebred and Mixed breed dogs.
NADAC (North American Dog Agility Council) Both purebred and mixed breed dogs.
ASCA (Australian Shepherd Club of America): Both purebred and mixed breed dogs.
AMBOR ( American Mixed Breed Owner Registry): For mixed breed dogs.
Teacup Agility Association: For all dogs under 17" at the withers. Obstacles and courses are scaled down.
  Canine Performance Events Both purebred and mixed breed dogs.  
Local Agility Clubs
  Gateway Agility Club: Local club that hosts AKC agility trials in the St. Louis area.
 
Greater St. Louis Agility Club: Local club that hosts AKC, USDAA and NADAC agility trials in the St. Louis area.
